I’m doing all the things!
I can’t believe it’s been a year since my last post! Well, yes, I can fully believe it because it has been non-stop. I am loving my job at the University of Edinburgh and have had so many opportunities, not least corrupting teaching future medical doctors and collaborating with amazing scholars.
But the work doesn’t stop now! Because of the unstable gig economy of academia, I have already been looking for my next job and, let me tell you, it is exhausting. I had to disable the email notifications on my phone because I was having anxious responses every time I opened my inbox.
So now is as good of a time as any to list my accomplishments since last year, if only to boost my morale.
Hail the Podcasting Queen
That’s right, not only have I organised a public workshop on podcasting as research for the Being Human Festival, but I have published season 3 of Philosophy Casting Call and started a brand new project. “Massively Disabled: A Long COVID Research Podcast” is my narrative non-fiction research diary where I explore long COVID as a mass disabling event with a history. The first episode is set to drop in October 2023 and mark your calendar for our hybrid lauch event on 9 November. You can also follow @massdisabledpod on Twitter and Instagram to be alerted to any new developments.
2. Carving out my niche
In addition to podcasting as scholarship, I am slowly but surely establishing my brand as a Filipinx disabled philosopher of disability. It may be crass to talk of myself in marketing terms, but blame late-stage neoliberal capitalism, not my crip self. But really, I have engaged with so many wonderful people that have inspired me to return refreshed to my scholarly practice and adapt it for the better. I am especially grateful to the Women Doing Philosophy community for giving me space to spread my fledgling mestizaje Filipinx philosophy. I could not have dreamt this present, so who knows what the future holds.
Well, it at least holds a publication! Pre-Order The Bloomsbury Guide to Philosophy of Disability now and this fall you’ll be able to read my chapter “A Crip Reading of Filipino Philosophy”.
3. Edinburgh Fringe performer
Ok, this one is a bit cheeky because I haven’t done it yet. The good news is, you can still buy tickets!
